With working from home a new normal for many people, what’s stopping you from starting a business from home too?

If you’ve been thinking about starting a new business from your front room, here’s a few tips to get you started

Establish a business idea

If you’re thinking of starting a business from home, chances are you’ve already thought up a winning business idea and have already started your research.

Your business idea should be something that interests you, something you have a passion for, as well as meet a need for consumers and clients.

If you’re still at this stage but have an idea about what you’re going to sell, then answer these questions:

  • Is there a demand for the product or service I am going to offer?
  • What is the benefit/s of the product or service?
  • Who is my target audience?
  • How will I advertise my business?
  • How much will I charge?
  • Is there a big enough demand to make my business profitable?

Write a business plan

A business plan is a great way to help you gain clarity when you’re first starting out. Plus, if you’re thinking of applying for business finance in the future, you’ll be required to have one.

Set up an office space

If you are planning on starting your business venture from home, it’s good to set aside an office space. That can be a complete spare room or a space in another room.

Ensure the area you choose has some privacy, especially if you’ll need to make calls to clients or customers. Another thing to take into consideration, is the room you will be working in. For example, some people find that working in their bedroom makes it difficult for them to sleep because there is no separation between work and home life.

Think about insurance

Starting a business can be risky and that’s why it’s a good idea to make sure you have the right insurance. You can find lots of information online about the different types of insurance cover available and the cover you’ll need specifically for your business.

Design a marketing plan

If you want to build a successful business, then you’ll need to spend a little time on marketing but before you part with any money, devise a plan.

Think about what you’d like to achieve, how you’re going to achieve it (social media, advertisements etc), what’s your budget, and how you’re going to measure the success of your marketing campaign.
